Music
It is our intent at Freeman Community Primary School to provide pupils with a high quality education in music to gain a coherent knowledge of core musical concepts, through a range of instruments. It should inspire children’s curiosity to learn and know more about music. We encourage children to engage with a range of musical instruments including percussion, glockenspiels, recorders and guitars throughout their time at Freeman. Through this children will not only have the opportunity to gain an understanding of concepts such as rhythm, pulse and pitch, but also gain the confidence to compose, practise and perform their own and others compositions. In Year 5 all children, regardless of ability or background are taught by music specialists from the County music service, to play the guitar. Children are also encouraged to pursuit extra musical tuition and partake in regular performances to the school and the wider community.
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
