Phonics
At Freeman Community Primary School we use Twinkl Phonics, a scheme validated by the DfE. Phonics is taught daily in Reception, Year1 and Year 2 and each lesson comprises of 4 elements.
- Revisit and Review- graphemes, tricky words and other concepts taught previously will be revisted and revised.
- Teach- new concepts will be taight. New concepts could be a new grapheme, alternative spellings or pronunciations, prefixes or suffices, apostrophes for contraction and much more.
- Practise- complettion of a tak, activity or game by the children to use the concept they have been taught.
- Apply- reading or writing words or sentences which contain the new concept which has been taught.
As children progress through the Phonics scheme, they will be introduced to spellings which will be sent home for the childrne to practise. Spellings comprise of a words including the concept taught that week, as well as common exception words set as part of the National Curriculum.
