Phonics is taught across the whole school at the same time every day following the Letters and Sounds Programme. This is supported using resources such as Phonics Play and Jolly Phonics. Children are taught phonics in ability groups. When the children have a thorough grasp of phonics the children move on to spelling work that includes dictation.

Our reading scheme follows a colour coding system that builds the children’s reading skills towards being independent readers. The scheme of books consists of Oxford Reading Tree and GINN fiction and non-fiction books. Reading is supported using various online resources such as Easyread and Bugs Club. Independent, guided reading and whole class reading (using VIPERS) take place in each class every week to support reading. For further information regarding whole class reading (using VIPERS) please see the documents below. Also, reading homework is set every week.

At Freeman we follow the Emmanuel Project to deliver Religious Education across the school. See the topic overview below for a breakdown of what is taught each term in each year group.

For more information about the curriculum please speak to your child's class teacher.
